Through the smart.aachen platform, we enable you to exchange and network for new solution ideas that create tangible added value for people and the environment through the use of digital technologies.

Exchanging and networking -
helping to shape Aachen

In late summer 2021, the Thinktank Smart City set out with the smart.aachen initiative to make the many existing solutions for the Smart City Aachen digitally visible: for citizens, innovators from science and industry, and interested parties from other municipalities and regions. Through the smart.aachen platform, we also facilitate exchange and networking for new solution ideas that generate tangible added value for people and the environment through the use of digital technologies. We see ourselves as a driving force in the field of smart cities and offer both innovation drivers and citizens the services that are right for them.

TBA: Smart City 2023 ideas competition
To promote projects and ideas that demonstrate new and digital solutions to current challenges, the Smart City think tank is calling for a citywide ideas competition in the summer of 2023. Answers are sought to questions such as: What will living, working and getting around look like in the future Aachen? What opportunities do digital technologies offer in the transformation to a future-proof, sustainable and livable city for all?

Committed representatives of civil society, small initiatives and associations are just as much addressed as universities, start-ups or companies. The spectrum of content is deliberately broad. Whether you want to contribute to climate and resource protection through the use of intelligent technologies, develop new formats of citizen participation, promote the digital participation of older people or revolutionize energy supply and mobility: all ideas are welcome. The important thing is that new technologies are used and that they create added value for people and the environment.

During a participation period lasting several weeks, applicants can submit their project ideas on the smart.aachen platform and have them voted on. The best ideas will win prize money of up to €10,000. More information will follow soon: stay tuned!

Smart funding opportunities for innovation drivers

Oecher Solar Offensive
On August 26, 2020, the Aachen City Council approved its own program to promote solar installations. Subsidies are granted for both photovoltaic (PV) systems and solar thermal systems for new installations. The funding supports private and commercial applicants* with properties in the city of Aachen.

According to the current solar funding guideline dated 1. January 2022, the following types of installations are eligible for funding:
- PV systems with an output of 1 kilowatt peak (kWp)
- electricity storage systems up to 20 kWh gross storage capacity
- plug-in solar devices with an output of 150 to 600 VA
- the conversion of a post-EEG system to self-consumption
- solar thermal systems
- combined solar-green roofs
- solar neighborhood festivals

You can find all the information about the funding amount and the general conditions here → Guideline for the promotion of solar systems
You can submit the application for the promotion of solar systems → here.
Efficient lighting technology for companies
STAWAG supports companies in the acquisition of new, efficient lighting technology with daylight- and/or motion-dependent control. Eligible for support are refurbishments of commercial lighting systems that result in significant energy and cost savings.
Amount of subsidies
Depending on the investment amount, grants of up to 5,000 euros are possible. The amount of the subsidy is 30 percent of the investment sum.

In order to be eligible for our subsidy,

- the commercial space must be larger than 100 m²,
- the lighting technology must be older than 10 years and
- the company must be an electricity customer of STAWAG.

Mobility Dashboard
The city of Aachen has compiled a whole range of traffic-relevant data in a mobility dashboard and made it available to the public online. For example, traffic volumes are recorded in real time by sensors at various locations, or occupancy data for parking garages is displayed in the parking guidance system. In addition, real-time data on traffic conditions, travel times and average speeds flow into the dashboard. This means that citizens of Aachen can find out at any time about currently available parking spaces, e-charging stations, sharing vehicles, construction sites and much more. We'll show you a few examples of how the mobility dashboard can make your everyday life easier:

The funding can also be used for the "STAWAG solar roof": Those who want to produce their own green electricity with a photovoltaic system on their own roof without large investment costs and time expenditure can rent the PV system from STAWAG.
→ to the STAWAG solar roof

STAWAG also promotes the purchase of electric motor scooters and electric cargo bikes with up to 300 euros. Here you can find the funding guideline for electric mobility as well as the corresponding funding application.

In order to achieve the climate targets set by the city of Aachen, a cargo bike funding program (LaRa) for families was launched as part of the integrated climate protection concept (IKSK). Over 350 families could be supported through this in 2022. The funding rate is 1,000 euros for cargo bikes without electric assistance and 1,600 euros for electric cargo bikes. The funding can be combined with a bonus of 1,000 euros for applicants in possession of an Aachen Pass. A further funding period is planned for 2023. Information on the funding conditions, the application process and the next funding period can be found → here The program can be used in addition to the STAWAG funding program if the relevant requirements are met.
Support program for energy-saving measures in buildings
The City of Aachen's subsidy program for energy-saving measures in buildings promotes energy-saving renovation work on the building envelope and building technology. This includes, for example, the insulation of exterior walls, the replacement of windows, and the replacement of old gas and oil boilers with heating systems that use renewable energy sources. Information on the funding conditions and how to apply can be found → here.
